What the passport preview demonstrates
The generator turns a small set of product fields into a customer-facing layout with a QR code, product identity, materials, origin, care and circularity information. It helps product, design and compliance teams discuss what a digital passport experience could look like before implementing permanent records and integrations.
A QR code alone is not a Digital Product Passport. Under ESPR, a passport is a structured set of product-specific data accessible through a data carrier. Product-specific measures determine required content, data-carrier placement, granularity, access rights and availability before a customer is bound by a sale, hire or hire-purchase contract.
Fields in the current preview
| Field | Purpose | Production consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Product name | Human-readable identity | Keep synchronized with the authoritative catalog. |
| Brand | Public economic identity | May not replace required manufacturer or responsible-operator information. |
| Product ID | Builds the demonstration URL | Use a stable unique identifier and define model, batch or item granularity. |
| Materials | Shows composition | Use structured components, percentages, units and evidence references. |
| Origin | Shows manufacturing origin | Define whether the value refers to product, component, facility or customs origin. |
| Care and circularity | Provides use and end-of-life guidance | Use controlled instructions and category-specific requirements. |
What a production implementation adds
Durable hosting
The data-carrier destination should remain available for the required period and survive catalog, platform and vendor changes.
Structured source data
Displayed claims should come from managed systems and evidence, not be retyped manually into a design template.
Access control
Public customer data, restricted business data and authority-only information may require different permissions.
Version history
Updates should be traceable so stakeholders can identify when data changed, why it changed and which evidence supported it.
Recommended design principles
- Show the most useful customer information first and avoid overwhelming the first screen.
- Use clear labels instead of unexplained compliance acronyms.
- Make repair, care, safety and end-of-life instructions easy to find.
- Provide accessible contrast, responsive layouts and meaningful image alternatives.
- Link claims to evidence or verification context where appropriate.
- Display the data-review date and responsible economic operator.
- Make the passport useful before treating it as a marketing surface.
Example implementation path
- Define the product identifier and passport granularity.
- Map each required field to its authoritative source.
- Collect and validate supplier evidence.
- Create structured records and category-specific validation.
- Publish a durable URL and generate the data carrier.
- Test public and restricted access roles.
- Monitor broken links, expired evidence and stale data.
Frequently asked questions
Does this create a legally compliant passport?
No. It creates a visual preview from limited fields. A production passport must meet applicable product-specific requirements.
Where does the QR code point?
It uses a demonstration product URL based on the entered product ID. A production system needs a durable live record at that URL.
Is the preview saved?
No. It is generated in the browser and can be printed or saved as a PDF, but it is not permanently hosted.
What should a production passport include?
Depending on the product rule, it may include identifiers, operators, compliance information, evidence, instructions, circularity data, access controls and version history.
