EU timeline
Digital Product Passport dates depend on product category
There is no single universal deadline for every product. Separate the ESPR framework, battery-specific obligations and future product-specific measures.
Timeline overview
| Date/framework | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 2024 ESPR | Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 establishes the general DPP framework and enables product-specific requirements through delegated acts. |
| February 18, 2027 | Battery passports apply to covered LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric-vehicle batteries under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. |
| 2026 registry implementation | Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778 addresses arrangements for the DPP registry; it does not make every product category immediately subject to a passport. |
| Product-specific measures | Textiles, furniture, tyres, metals and other groups require monitoring for the delegated acts that define exact requirements and application dates. |
How to interpret a date responsibly
- Confirm the exact product classification and intended use.
- Identify whether a sector-specific regulation already applies.
- Distinguish publication, entry into force, transition and application dates.
- Confirm whether obligations apply at model, batch or item level.
- Monitor corrections, guidance and implementing measures.
What companies should do before a final deadline
Build reusable product identity, supplier evidence, document renewal and structured-data processes. Waiting for a final deadline often leaves insufficient time to collect upstream data from suppliers.
