Prepare a Shopify catalog for Digital Product Passports

A Shopify export is a useful starting point, but product-passport readiness also depends on evidence and data that commonly live outside the storefront.

AreaCheck
IdentityUnique product, variant, SKU and barcode values are stable and not reused.
Brand and operatorVendor/brand and responsible economic-operator details are clearly distinguished.
OriginCountry-of-origin data reflects manufacturing and has a supportable source.
MaterialsComposition is structured by component and percentage, not only embedded in descriptions.
Care and durabilityCare instructions and durability-related claims are consistent and supported.
MeasurementsWeight and dimensions have clear units and meanings.
Evidence linkEvery regulated or sustainability claim can be traced to a current document or source record.

Data commonly missing from Shopify

Facility information, certificate scope, test results, substances information, repair data, recycled-content evidence, carbon information and restricted-access technical records often belong in a PIM, ERP, evidence vault or specialized compliance system rather than storefront metafields alone.

Recommended workflow

  1. Export all products and variants.
  2. Run the readiness checker.
  3. Resolve missing identifiers before enriching descriptive fields.
  4. Create structured metafields only after defining ownership and validation rules.
  5. Link supplier documents to product, facility and claim scope.
  6. Test JSON output with the schema validator.
Important: Shopify should not automatically become the sole source of truth for regulatory evidence. Use it as part of a controlled product-data architecture.
