Digital Product Passport preparation for textile brands
Textile teams should begin with structured product identity, composition, origin, durability, care, chemical and supplier-evidence data rather than waiting for final implementation pressure.
What is known today
The ESPR establishes the Digital Product Passport framework and identifies textiles as a priority area in EU ecodesign work. Exact mandatory fields and transition dates depend on product-specific measures. A brand should therefore build an adaptable evidence model rather than hard-code assumptions as final law.
Core preparation areas
Product identity
Stable model, SKU, variant and barcode identifiers, plus the responsible economic operator.
Material composition
Structured fiber percentages, component distinctions and evidence supporting recycled, organic or certified claims.
Supply-chain evidence
Supplier, facility, origin, certificates, declarations, test reports and document validity.
Use and circularity
Care, durability, repair, reuse, recycling and end-of-life information appropriate to the product.
Common gaps
- Composition exists only in free-text descriptions.
- Country of origin is not linked to manufacturing evidence.
- Certificates are stored without product or claim scope.
- Variant identifiers are inconsistent across Shopify, ERP and supplier files.
- Claims such as recycled or organic content lack current supporting documents.
A practical sequence
- Run the Shopify DPP Readiness Checker.
- Classify products and determine the applicable economic-operator role.
- Create a field-to-evidence matrix.
- Request missing supplier records using a repeatable template.
- Track certificate expiry and changes.
- Validate structured output and test a public preview.
